Shortly after my wife and I were married, I built this small dining table for the apartment we lived in. I know there has to be some really spacious apartments out there somewhere, but I suspect most apartments are like the one my wife and I rented: they’re compact. The kitchen was small and the adjacent dining area was sized in a similar way.
A great benefit of being a woodworker is the ability to size a project to fit the available space in the best way possible. When we shopped for a permanent dining table, an agreeable and affordable option in the size we desired wasn’t available. So, I got my tape measure, some graph paper and drew the table you see above (I built this table about 1985, long before my first home computer and SketchUp).
I always liked that dining table, so my new woodworking plan titled You Can Build an Apartment Dining Table shows how I built it. The illustrations have been slightly modified to show how I would make this same table today.
Here are some screen shots of example pages of the plan…
The plan includes…
- Fourteen pages
- Cut list
- Multiple large illustrations
- Links to additional web information
I consider this to be an intermediate level project, but is a good plan for the beginner who wants to move up to the next level. This project is ideal for learning how to use dowels for leg to apron joinery, glue-up and trim a large panel like the tabletop and using a router to create a tongue for the bread board ends.
