About/Contact

My smoother was behaving particularly well.

Me using my smoothing plane.

Welcome to my website. My name is Jeff Branch and while I work full-time in the flooring industry. I have been building furniture for about 30 years in my home based workshop in Pelham, Alabama, USA.

I am a power tool woodworker, but I have recently begun building a better collection of hand planes and chisels (and I have a new appreciation for hand tools).

This blog shows the process for building furniture and completing trim carpentry style home improvement projects. While this is a “how-to” blog, it is also a journal chronicling my journey as a woodworker.

I am married to a wonderful wife and I have a daughter who recently graduated from the University of Alabama. My daughter is also a blogger and writes at Bethcakes.com.

You can contact me by using the contact form at the bottom of the page.

MY RESUME

Education
I graduated from the University of Alabama with a BA in Communication.

Work Experience
I have always been in sales. For the past 25 years I have worked in the flooring industry holding both sales and sales management positions. I currently work as a manufacturer’s representative selling residential and commercial flooring products to retail flooring stores and commercial sub-contractors in central Alabama.

Woodworking
I began woodworking while at the University of Alabama taking a woodworking shop class my senior year called “Wood Technology”. I consider myself a hobbyist woodworker, but I have completed several projects on a commission basis.

Woodworking Plans
I have created twelve woodworking plans. These typically include a lot of illustration via SketchUp. See my plan portfolio by clicking here. The most rewarding comment from a reader who completed a project from on one of my plans is shown here.

SketchUp
I am proficient with SketchUp Make and have created SketchUp models on a freelance basis. See examples of my SketchUp work here. Then, I have collected some good online resources for SketchUp – see them here.

Product Reviews
I write reviews of products related to woodworking. Some notable reviews from my blog:

Ron Hock’s “The Perfect Edge”: I reviewed Ron Hock’s book, The Perfect Edge. Ron commented at his website, “Jeff Branch of Pelham, Alabama wrote the most comprehensive, flattering review of The Perfect Edge yet.” He continued to say, “…when it gets such a great and thorough review I just have to pass it along.”

A Review of Bob Lang’s “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp”: About this review, Bob Lang said: “People have said nice things about it before, but this review just appeared on the blog Jeff Branch’s Woodworking. Jeff wrote one of the most thorough reviews I have ever read, and when people ask me questions about Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp from now on, I think I’ll just send them to read what he wrote.”

A review of  “The Naked Woodworker” which got me a mention at the Lost Art Press’ website.

A review of “Pocket Hole Joinery” by Mark Edmundson.
